Offline: Little screens

November 06, 2006 | Offline

I was sitting in front of Target today. I had my cellphone. I don’t surf the web or text message with it. But I was thinking, “I could check my email…“. I’m kinda glad I have opted against this convenience. First of all, I can call someone, talk, and say I have to go now. Text messaging means I could continue the conversation for a longer period since it doesn’t really disrupt my attention to other things.

And then, who reads that small of a screen. My gosh, you have to press like eight buttons to read a short message. I’ve started typing calendar notes, but I don’t know. I guess you get use to it. (I’m not going blind!!)

Perhaps I’m a little offline today.

Website: youOS.com

November 06, 2006 | Cool Websites

youOS.com is like a remote desktop. All done in the browser, you can write (simple) documents, play games, browse the Web with a browser window, etc. The last one is funny. You’re in a browser (FireFox?) and you’re surfing the web through another “browser” (really like an iframe or something like that). Um, okay.

There are icons on the desktop like most OS have. You can move them around. There’s a menu, that was just upgraded to be a branching tree instead of just one long list of stuff.  I had so much stuff in the menu that I couldn’t see the bottom.  I guess I wasn’t the only one. And they even have a Develop your own apps. Pretty cool.

Why: craigslist.org

November 05, 2006 | Why?

So, why is it craigslist.org? craigslist.com works, but redirects to the .org.

Now, I understand the simplicity of the frontend. But Google was once just a page with a textbox and a button (in a short summary). Is the site going to update to Web 2.0? Google did; in a big way.

It is also interesting that there isn’t really a message system except for email and the forums.

Maybe it is a matter of simplicity. Look at what happens when you build more and more features. You lose a little history and functionality.

Website: FWDitON.com

November 04, 2006 | Cool Websites

FWDitON, http://www.fwditon.com, is a Digg-type website but with email jokes instead of cool websites or news. Anyone can forward an email joke to a submission email address. Soon after, it will turn into an item for others to read and rate on the site, and possibily get on the frontpage. Uses AJAX, has bugs, but is young. Went live during the summer. Cool colors, but highly bloated code. The whois shows a AU person.

Everyone has to start somewhere.
